What Is Delta 9 THC? Your Ultimate Guide

Read Time:2 Minute, 53 Second

Many people the world over are familiar with the leaf. No matter what you call it, weed, pot, ganja, mary jane, people know it by the way it looks and the way it smells.

Before it was considered a heinous drug reserved only for degenerates and the criminal element. Now, however, more people are enjoying its usage.

Anyone from the college freshman in his dorm to the president can get some (depending on where you are in the United States). Most people don’t really pay attention to what’s inside the leaf that makes it so good though.

So what is Delta 9 THC? here is a brief guide that gives you all you need to know about the chemical that makes marijuana so good.

What Is Delta 9 THC?

Delta 9 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the compound in marijuana that produces the feeling of euphoria, or “high”, that you feel when you use marijuana.

Delta 9 is a psychotropic chemical. This means it affects the perceptions of the user and can alter the user’s behavior as well as mental activity.

Other parts of the marijuana and hemp plants like cannabidiol (CBD) and their precursor CBG (cannabigrerol). All three are what’s known as cannabinoids, or compounds found within the plant. CBG reacts similarly to THC with the chemicals in your brain to help temper some of the side effects of THC. If you’re wondering does CBG get you high, the answer is “no” as it is non-psychoactive, unlike THC.

How THC Works

How THC works are pretty straightforward. The compound connects to your body’s endocannabinoid receptors which feed into your nervous system through the brain.

Ever wonder why your job asks for you to take a drug test and they make you pee in a cup or use a piece of hair? It’s because your body stores things like THC in this way.

You can find THC in your hair follicles and can be detected through testing for up to 90 days. Urine testing is often used but is often unreliable. THC can also be stored in your body fat and organs for up to a month.

Uses and Side Effects of THC

There are four main consumptions of THC:

  1. Inhalation: Smoking, vaping, or burning marijuana
  2. Consumption: Using things like edibles to consume THC
  3. Topical Application: Using solves, balms, and lotions. You can find them in concentrates like CBG wax as well
  4. Sublingual Administration: Using things like spray and dissolving strips under your tongue.

But with any psychoactive drug, THC isn’t without its side effects. THC can impair your ability to operate heavy machinery, which can be dangerous when driving, can cause psychotic episodes, and increase the chances of paranoia and anxiety.

Then, of course, there’s always the possibility of addiction to marijuana, especially if you use it as an adolescent because your brain is still forming.

The Skinny on Delta 9

Knowing what is Delta 9 THC is only one part of the story, and the other part is left to you. Are you ready to try THC? Where do you even start? Well, that’ll only be answered when you decide to try it for yourself.
