Good Communication Between Teachers And Students: A Necessity

Read Time:2 Minute, 45 Second

The way one communicates brings in a lot of change and that is why building communication skills are necessary. It makes tasks simpler and leaves no chances of misunderstanding. Just like communication between teachers and students is essential, communication between teachers and parents is equally important.

Benefits of Good Communication Between Teachers and Students

There are various advantages of developing good communication are many.

  • It establishes mutual trust.
  • It helps in avoiding misunderstandings. In most cases, a problem may never arise.
  • It helps in resolving problems, in case there are any.
  • When teachers and parents have regular conversations, both parties will have a clear understanding of the student’s performance and growth, as well as the student’s behaviour and any sudden changes.

How to Build a Good Teacher-Parent Connection

There are many ways of building a good relationship between teachers and parents. Both teachers and parents should put in the effort to establish a good relationship.

Here are some suggestions for teachers:

  • Try Establishing a Relationship at the Beginning of the Session

You can organize an orientation program at the beginning of the session with not only your students but also their parents. This will be very beneficial if you teach online because, unlike in traditional schools, parents will not be coming for results, parent-teacher meetings or any program at school.

You should also explain the interface to them along with the students if you use the online teaching app to teach. Even if you teach in traditional classes, you might be using LMS to streamline the teaching process, explain that as well. If you teach to a smaller age group, parents’ assistance is a must.

Also, introduce yourself, and make them be comfortable with you. Interact with the parents and ask for their expectations from you, the class, and their child.

  •  Keep Them in the Loop

Every parent is interested in knowing about their child’s performance, progress, behaviour and overall conduct. Therefore, you should keep them informed about the same. You can hold meetings or send updates via different channels to the parents.

These updates could also contain advice for parents to assist their children to be prepared for the class. For example, if your next class is about water and its various forms, you can ask the parents to show it to their children so that they have a basic idea about the same.

Whenever a student performs well or does something that deserves praise, inform their parents. This helps you establish a positive relationship with their parents.  This will make your job easier when you have something negative or critical to share with them regarding academics or overall conduct. Typically, a teacher will contact a child’s family only if there is unpleasant news to report, so picture how startled the parents will be if they receive a call with positive news.

  • Create a Healthy Relationship

Be conscious of the language that you use to communicate with your student’s parents. Even if you have some negative remarks to share, use words that do no harm. Also, to create a healthy relationship with them, make sure that your initial conversations are related to something positive about them.
