Understanding trust issues

Read Time:3 Minute, 14 Second

It seems as if the phrase trust issues has become a part of the vernacular expression. So many characters on television are depicted to have trust issues, but what exactly does this statement mean?

What are trust issues?

Trust issues are far from the fashion statement that they are made out to be. The lack of ability to trust others means that you are wary of people, and you doubt any sort of good will that they possess.

You consequently remain self-reliant. You bottle everything up inside of you, as you do not trust others with your private information. This can then have implications for your mental health, as it can get extremely lonely.

Furthermore, talking to people helps in catharsis and gaining perspective, and you then deprive yourself of this good side of things. This may then lead to mental health problems that require the intervention of a Best Psychologist in Karachi then.

Moreover, those with trust issues also do not end up having meaningful and deep relationships, as they do not allow people to get closer to them. Resultantly, all that remains is acquaintanceship, and not the deep bond of friendship.

Trust issues also play an important role in romantic relationships, with people having a tough time finding a partner, and then letting their connection become deeper.

What are the causes of trust issues?

People are not born with trust issues; they are conditioned into them. Some of the possible causes for your inability to trust people include:

Childhood

Children are extremely impressionable, which is why giving them the right environment is critical. If they cannot count on their own family for support, they then tend to develop mistrust of everyone then.

Experience

Your brain uses your experience as evidence to formulate a stance. Therefore, when you have been cuckolded, or when people have betrayed you, you tend to develop trust issues.

Furthermore, as people with trust issues are more likely to have difficulty in forgiving and forgetting, having a bad experience then edifies their stance.

Personality

People who are more neurotic are also more likely to have trust issues. Similarly, those who like controlling things may consider trusting others as losing control, and thus they refrain from letting people in.

Similarly, people who have strong internal locus of control, meaning that they believe that their fate is in their own hands, are also more likely to not trust others.

PTSD

People with posttraumatic stress disorder are more likely to suffer from trust issues, as their trauma changes their subjectivities.

Trauma associated with abuse from your own partner can have lingering impacts on not just your physical health, but more importantly, your mental health. Naturally, it then makes it harder for people to trust again.

What are the harmful effects of trust issues?

While your lack of trust might be justified considering what you have been through, but at the same time, the mistrust of others also has a grave impact on our wellbeing.

We need human contact to operate, and when we are unable to rely on others, it can jeopardize our health. Some other facets of our life that mistrust leads to include:

Behavior: Your behavior towards others changes when you do not trust them. You can come off as cold, closed off, or even downright rude.

Negativity: When you are distrustful of others, you tend to focus on the negative, as you continuously wait for the other shoe to drop. This onslaught of negative emotions then leads to you becoming more cynical, and it also perturbs your mental peace.

Social life: Trust is a principal component of relationships, romantic or otherwise. When it is missing, your social life tends to suffer.

How to heal?

The journey of healing is contingent on the underlying cause of trust issues. A good way to combat them is by seeking help from a Psychologist in Lahore.
