How to Keep Pests from Invading Your Home in Winter

Read Time:2 Minute, 7 Second

Some pests, particularly outdoor ones, thrive in a warm climate. However, a lot of local pests will stick around during the coldest months of the year. Indeed, chilly weather can attract warm-blooded critters indoors. And rodents commonly migrate inside homes when the weather gets cold to find a cozy shelter and lots of food sources.

Apart from rodents, raccoons may also dwell in attics. Also, you should watch out for termites, bed bugs, cockroaches, and spiders. A lot of insects are most active when the sun is up; however, they may not go dormant in the winter. If you want to keep your home pest-free this winter, here are Boise pest control tips you should consider:

Store Food Items Properly

To keep inactive pests from becoming active in winter, you should place your food in hard plastic containers. For a lot of bugs, the winter months are a time to go into diapause. In this state, their body starts to eat its own fat stores for energy. That is why you may see stink bugs frozen in place or creeping through curtains when the weather gets very cold. If you get these bugs something to eat, you will see them scurrying instead of creeping. By keeping your bugs in hard plastic containers, you ensure these bugs eat less.

Clear Any Possible Habitat Around Your House

Check the surrounding of your house to find and eliminate possible insect and pest habitats. Often, pests prefer to stay in places with lots of moisture, food, and warmth, which is ideal for reproduction. And once they find this place near your home, they will begin to climb or crawl into your house when the temperature drops. To keep these bugs away from your home, keep the gutters and downspouts clean, get rid of debris and objects like boards, rocks, and bricks near your house, keep your trees pruned, and keep your trash away from your house. Ensure Your Kitchen is Always Clean

Pests like mice and roaches invade your home in the winter to find food. This makes your kitchen a likely target of these bugs. So, make sure you do not leave any food out for a long time, eliminate pet food bowls once your pets have taken their meals, sweep the floor regularly, and get rid of crumbs on the counters. Ensure your cereal, pasta, and bread are protected and do not leave out your dishes overnight.
