The one-piece is a Japanese manga created and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. The anime series One Piece was adapted from it with the same name. The story is about protagonist Monkey D. Luffy who is searching for the world’s most valuable treasure “One Piece”. Luffy is also famous for his rubber-like superpower which he gained by consuming a Devil fruit. Luffy travels the world with his straw hat pirate crew and dreams to become the next pirate king.
This world-famous anime was produced by Toei Animation and premiered in Japan on Fuji TV in October 1999. One-piece Anime series was licensed by 4kids Entertainment to telecast an English dubbed version of one piece in North America in 2004 but the license was revoked by Funimation in 2007. To this day One Piece has been aired over nine hundred episodes and got displayed in different languages and countries across the world.
One-piece got much recognition for its story, humor, characterization, and artwork. The original manga volumes have broken many records in Japan publishing world for the highest initial run of printing any books. On the official website of One Piece manga, it is declared that this manga series has set a Guinness book of world record with the record title “The most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author.”
The one-piece manga has sold over 470 million copies in more than 42 countries across the world till May 2020. Thus it gained the title of most selling manga series in history. Not only one piece made history in most selling in number but also it held the rank of best-selling manga series for eleven years continuously. In this long time, one piece has profited more than $21 billion from franchise, anime and films, manga, games, and even merchandise.
On 2nd August Shonen Jump declared that this famous manga and anime franchise is coming to its end in near future.
Production of One Piece
Eiichiro Oda got fascinated with pirates from an early age. He was a daily viewer of an animated TV series known as “Vicky the Viking”. This early influence pushed him to create a manga series, about pirates. He was also a fan of pirate biographies and this interest made him include real-life pirates into his famous manga series. For example, one piece character Marshall D. Teach is based on history famous pirate Edward “Blackbeard” Teach.
Dragon Ball, the famous manga and anime series of another legendary mangaka Akira Toriyama also influenced Eiichiro Oda. He started writing One Piece in the year 1996. This series began as two short stories with the name “Romance Dawn”, later which was used as the title of one piece’s first chapter and volume. The first one of these stories was published in Akamaru Jump in August 1996 and later in One Piece Red. The second story was reprinted in 19978 in Oda’s short story collection “Wanted!”
Awards and Acclamations
From the year 2000 to 2002 One Piece manga was nominated for The Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for consecutive three years. It also fetched the highest number of fan following as well as fan nomination in the first two years of its release.
The 44th volume of one piece’s German translation fetched the prestigious Sondermann Audience award in the category of the international manga. In 2005 a yearly comic award was given o One Piece by Frankfurter Rundschau. It also has been voted the most interesting manga by Japanese teenagers and also been nominated for favorite manga series by Nickelodeon Magazine in the 2009 Comics award.
